Overview
Course selection is an important part of planning your high school experience. Students work closely with counselors and families to choose classes that support their academic goals, graduation requirements, and future plans.
Who Selects Courses & When
Incoming 9th Grade Students (Current SSFUSD 8th Graders)
Students will select courses for their freshman year after meeting with high school counselors in January.
New Students to SSFUSD / El Camino
Students enrolling at El Camino High School will meet with a counselor to select courses after completing the student enrollment process.
Current ECHS Students (Grades 9–11)
Students will:
- Meet with counselors to plan their schedule
- Review options with their parents/guardians
- Return completed course selection forms within one week
How to Select Your Courses
Follow these steps to complete your course selection:
Step 1: Meet with Your Counselor
Students will meet with their school counselor to review graduation requirements, explore course options, and discuss academic and career goals.
Step 2: Review Course Options
Explore available courses, including core classes, electives, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) options, to build a balanced schedule.
Step 3: Discuss with Your Family
Review course selections with a parent or guardian to make sure choices align with your goals and interests.
Step 4: Complete Your Course Selection Form
Fill out your course selection form carefully, making sure all required fields and signatures are completed.
Step 5: Submit Your Form on Time
Return your completed form within the designated timeline (typically within one week) to ensure your course requests are considered.
Step 6: Request Approval for Advanced Courses (if applicable)
Students enrolling in Honors or AP courses must obtain teacher recommendations and submit a signed student/parent contract.
Step 7: Plan Ahead with Your Four-Year Plan
Use your four-year plan to make sure your course selections keep you on track for graduation and future goals.

- Parent/guardian involvement is strongly encouraged throughout the course selection process
- Students enrolling in Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) courses must:
- Receive teacher recommendation
- Submit a signed student/parent contract
